VISIT THE NATIONALITY ROOMS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH, THE HEINZ CHAPEL AND THE CARNEGIE – an incredible combination for an incredible day!

Join us on a virtual mini-tour of the world as you enter the Nationality Rooms at the University of Pittsburgh. Through architecture and decor, 26 classrooms reflect the Old World heritages of Pittsburghers. Guests will be transported from the 5th century B.C. Greece to 18th century Poland. The Nationality Rooms feature historical figures, myths, art and events of European, Scandinavian, Middle Eastern, African and Asian cultures. The rooms are expressions of timeless human values.

Just a stone’s throw away is the Heinz Memorial Chapel. The chapel, a gift of Henry John Heinz, founder of H.J. Heinz, and his children, is non-denominational and is intended to inspire and celebrate human achievement. The Heinz Memorial Chapel is one of the foremost modern examples of French-Gothic architecture in the U.S. and contains 23 stained glass windows created by Charles Connick. The 73-foot tall transept windows are among the tallest stained glass windows in the world and represent temperance, truth, tolerance, and courage. An equal number of men and women are depicted in these windows.

Lunch is not usual fare at the annual St. Nicholas Greek Food Festival where everything is homemade and served by the church members. Perhaps Greek music will be played during lunch. What a treat and another taste of Pittsburgh heritage!

Across the street from the church is The Carnegie which was built by industrialist Andrew Carnegie. This large sandstone complex is the home to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History which is the sixth largest natural history museum in the nation and home to the world’s third largest repository of dinosaur fossils and third best mineral and gem collection in the United States. Adjacent to this museum is the Sarah Scaife Museum of Art which features distinguished masterpieces of French Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and 19th-Century American art. Each entity has a myriad of traveling and permanent exhibits and activities to enjoy and explore. A special exhibit to see while you are in Pittsburgh is "The Great British Art: 200 Years of Watercolors, Drawings, and Prints", which has 80 works on display and is on loan from the Bank of New York Mellon Collection. Artists include, but are not limited to, John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough and Thomas Rowlandson. Don’t forget to stop in the Heinz Architectural Center to see their current exhibit, "Ecology.Design.Synergy", which highlights the blending of environmentally responsible design and aesthetics.
