Monday, May 5, 2008 — 8:50 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
Room 305 - David L. Lawrence Convention Center

The AIST International Alliance Lecture was established in 2008 to provide AISTech conference attendees with an improved awareness of global and regional steel industry developments. Each year, a representative from the various industry trade groups, institutes and professional societies located around the world will be invited to deliver this lecture.

The 2008 and inaugural AIST International Alliance Lecturer is Dr. Carl-Dieter Wuppermann of Steel Institute VDEh, Düsseldorf, Germany. Dr. Wuppermann’s lecture is entitled: "The Steel Industry Within the European Union Against the Background of Globalization: Challenges and Opportunities."

Dr. Wuppermann is currently the general manager of Steel Institute VDEh and managing director of Betriebsforschungsinstitut GmbH. He graduated from RWTH Aachen University with a degree in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A. While earning his M.B.A., he worked in the Research Centre at RWTH Aachen University under Prof. Schenck, studying the structure of the international steel industry. In 1977, Wuppermann went to work for Mannesmannröhren-Werke AG, with locations in Düsseldorf and Mülheim. There he held several jobs, with his last position being head of the plug mill division/7–14 inch pipe hot rolling. He remained with Mannesmannröhren-Werke AG until 1991. From 1991 to 1995, he served as the technical director of the stainless flat division of Thyssen Edelstahlwerke AG Krefeld. In 1996, Wuppermann became a member of the board of ThyssenKrupp Electrical Steel GmbH, leaving that post in 2005. He has held his current position at VDEh since 2005.
