AISTech Student Participation Form
In order to help us plan for student events, we request that all students, in addition to registering for the conference, complete a participation form. Contact Lori Wharrey at LWharrey@aist.org or 724-776-6040, etc. 621 if you have any questions.
Travel Grants
Both the AIST Foundation and the Material Advantage Student Program have funds available for travel assistance for undergraduate students who wish to attend AISTech 2008. Material Advantage funds are available to Material Advantage Chapters, AIST Foundation funds are available to individual students who attend a university without a Material Advantage Chapter. Funds are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. The number of travel grants available is limited, so apply early using the AISTech Student Participation Form. The deadline to apply for a grant is April 15, 2008. Conference registration is required for all travel grant recipients.
- Material Advantage Chapter Travel Grants — Material Advantage Chapters may apply for a grant that will provide up to $500 to reimburse travel expenses.
- AIST Foundation Student Travel Grants — Grants are available to individual undergraduate students who attend a university without a Material Advantage Chapter to cover travel expenses.
Session Monitors
AIST offers students the opportunity to earn $50 per session while attending AISTech as a Student Session Monitor. Questions should be directed to Ken Landau at klandau@aist.org.
Attendance Challenge
AIST has issued a challenge to all universities! The university with the highest number of students in attendance will receive $500.
Professors Invited – Complimentary Registration (bring 5 or more undergraduate students)
AIST invites all engineering department professors to attend AISTech 2008. In an effort to encourage undergraduate student attendance, we offer conference registration reimbursement (up to $555) to each professor who brings 5 or more undergraduate engineering students from their university to the conference. Offer is available on a first-come, first-served basis. To take advantage of this offer, please complete this (Professor Registration Reimbursement Form).
Student Schedule
Sunday, May 4
Plant Tour – U. S. Steel Corp. is hosting a tour specifically for students to the U. S. Steel Research & Technology Center in Munhall, Pa. All students registered will be transported to the facility from Pittsburgh (pick-up at the Westin) at 12:00 noon and return by 3:00 p.m. Advance registration using the AISTech Student Participation Form, is required, and space is limited. - Orientation Dinner/Recruiting — Join students from other universities for Orientation at the Westin (in the Westin-Oreland Room) at 4:30 p.m. followed by a casual dinner and reception at 5:30 p.m. The Orientation will provide an update on AIST and information on the valuable technical and social events available to students at AISTech. An AIST member will discuss the iron and steel industry’s opportunities for young professionals as well as the importance of membership in AIST. The reception following will give students an opportunity to speak to the corporate sponsors about internships and jobs.
- Steel Scavenger Hunt — Conference scavenger hunt forms will be distributed at Orientation on Sunday, May 4. Students will be asked to find information about AISTech 2009, iron and steel-related companies, and AIST and its members. Completed forms must be turned in by 4:15 p.m. on Monday, May 5 to receive a door prize ticket. Prizes will be drawn at 4:30 p.m. following the Student Project Presentation Contest in room 311 of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
Monday, May 5
- Technical Sessions — Students are encouraged to attend the Brimacombe Memorial Lecture in the Convention Center from 8 to 9 a.m. Dr. Kent Peaslee from the University of Missouri – Rolla is the lecturer. Attend other technical sessions from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
- AIST Industry-University Roundtable -
Noon – 2 p.m., David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Room 333
Industry human resource professionals, university career services professionals, and university professors will come together to discuss today’s steel industry and the need to promote the great career opportunities available to students. Input on recruiting strategies and ideas from all three groups will help tackle this issue. Dr. Kent Peaslee from Missouri University of Science & Technology will Chair the roundtable.
- Student Project Presentation Contest — This contest will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. in Room 311 of the Convention Center. Undergraduate students who participate will present their projects in a 15 minute session type atmosphere. Students will be judged on technical content, topic coverage and presentation skills. Presentation topics should be technical in nature, with added weight for steel-related presentations. All participants will receive $300 toward travel reimbursement. The top three winners will receive cash prizes, $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place. Advance registration is required using the AISTech Student Participation Form, and space is limited to 8 participants.
- Awards and Prizes — Contest winner awards and Steel Scavenger Hunt door prizes will be presented at 4:30 p.m. following the Student Project Presentation contest in room 311 of the Convention Center.
- Reception – A reception will be held in the exhibit hall from 5 to 6 p.m. Take advantage of this networking opportunity!
- Social – Students are invited for dinner and fun at Dave & Busters. A bus will depart the Convention Center at 6:30 p.m. and return at 9:30 p.m.
Tuesday, May 6
Plant Tour – U. S. Steel Corp. is hosting a plant tour specifically for students to visit two U. S. Steel plants in Mon Valley, Edgar Thomson Plant (steelmaking), and Irvin Plant (finishing). All students registered will be transported to the facilities from the Convention Center at 8 a.m. Breakfast on-the-go will be provided and return by 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided by U. S. Steel Corp. This is a great opportunity to see the steel processes from start to finish. Advance registration using the AISTech Student Participation Form, is required, and space is limited. - Technical Sessions — Students are encouraged to attend the many technical sessions of varying topics.
