of global and regional steel industry developments. Each year, a representative from the various steel industry trade groups, instittutes and professional societies located around the world will be invited to deliver this lecture.
The 2012 AIST International Alliance Lecturer is Mr. G.K. Basak, executive secretary of the Joint Plant Committee, Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India. Mr. Basak's lecture is titled "The Steel Industry of India —Remarkable Growth and Transition."
Mr. Gautam Kumar Basak, a well-recognized name in the Indian steel fraternity, earned a master’s degree in statistics with specialization in computer science from the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. Mr. Basak has steered the Joint Plant Committee (JPC) in building a vast database on iron and steel and its related items and has helped open new avenues of growth for the organization. The JPC, under Mr. Basak’s leadership, has emerged as an authentic information base in the country, the only such source recognized by the Ministry of Steel and the stakeholders/beneficiaries of the industry. Mr. Basak has guided the JPC to its present status as the “destination of knowledge of iron and steel” and the facilitator of the Indian steel industry. His initiation has recently brought the JPC to join with the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) in disseminating state-of-the-art technical knowledge in India through the AIST International Steel Academy.
