History of the AIST Detroit Member Chapter

In 1938, the AISE Detroit Section became the 6th district section of Association of Iron and Steel Engineers (AISE). The section's first official meeting and installation of officers took place on 1 Jun 1938 in the Detroit Edison Auditorium. Julius A. Clauss, national president, 1940, then chief engineer of Great Lakes Steel Corp. and founder of the section, presided. The first chairman was Loyal R. Milburn, Great Lakes Steel Corp. Mr. Milburn served from 1938-1940. James L Laidlaw, The Algoma Steel Corp. Ltd., chairman 1965-1966 and Robert McBride, National Steel Corp., also served as national presidents. The Iron and Steel Society Detroit Local Section was formed in 1975. In 2004, with the merger of AISE and ISS, the Detroit sections were combined to form the AIST Detroit Member Chapter. The Detroit Member Chapter includes Michigan and parts of Northwestern Ohio.
