The Ironmaking Technology Committee (IMTC) held a symposium entitled Scrap Supplements and Alternative Ironmaking VI in Baltimore, Md., on 28–30 October 2012. The organizing committee included Joe Poveromo, RMI Global Consulting; Andre Pujadas, Severstal Columbus; Jan van der Stel, Tata Research IJmuiden; Mike Riley, Praxair; Jose Noldin, ABM; Frank Griscom, International Iron Metallics Association; and Kanji Takeda, JFE Steel. The symposium included papers associated with a high level of activity in research, process and project development, plant construction and start-up of direct reduction and alternative ironmaking processes. The conference focused on the following areas: successful projects/processes, the challenges of struggling processes, processes still under development and new approaches, and the use of products. The approximately 100 attendees found the conference to be very informative and worth enduring Hurricane Sandy and its full impact.
