Continuous Casting — A Practical Training Seminar

Conference Details: 16–19 October 2017, Fort Wayne, Ind., USA

Conference Highlights: This year’s Continuous Casting course had 92 participants, including 51 steel producers representing 26 steel companies. All 14 presenters for this seminar are members of the Continuous Casting Technology Committee (CCTC). This year’s program moved the plant tour from the end of the conference to the middle, followed by the panel discussion. This changed benefited the panel discussion and allowed for CCTC member participation.
The program started with a historical perspective of continuous casting, which was followed by the latest caster designs and technology. Presentations regarding initial solidification and oscillation mark formation, sources for re-oxidation in liquid steel, caster breakouts, and caster quality defects and potential causes completed the first day’s lineup.
The second day began with a maintenance theme, discussing mold materials and design, mold and copper maintenance, along with coating technologies, and caster rolls and overlay technologies. Following lunch was a tour of Steel Dynamics Inc. – Structural and Rail Division.
After the tour a panel discussion was held along with a reception. Jeff Brower, Primetals Technologies, served as moderator, with the following panelists: Rudolf Moravec, ArcelorMittal Global R&D; Bill Schlichting, SKW North America; Rick Besich, ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor; Ian Deeks, Nucor Steel–South Carolina; and Ian Bakshi, KME America.
The third day presented billet and bloom operations and maintenance issues, followed by caster hydraulics. Caster secondary cooling water treatment was then discussed, followed by caster bearings preventive maintenance to conclude the seminar.
The 2018 Continuous Casting — A Practical Training Seminar will be in Memphis, Tenn., USA, on 8–11 October 2018, featuring a plant tour of Big River Steel.
