Specialty Alloy & Foundry Training Seminar

Conference Details: 13–15 March 2017, Mobile, Ala., USA

Conference Highlights: Joachim Stolz, director of melting, Outokumpu Stainless Inc., served as the keynote speaker. He presented a plant overview and then provided a plant tour at the conclusion of the seminar.
Raymond Monroe, executive director of the Steel Founders’ Society of America, discussed stainless and specialty steelmaking markets and applications, along with induction melting practices. Charles Fink, Inductotherm Corp., discussed induction melting furnace design. Next, Diana David, Steel Founders’ Society of America, presented “The Elements,” which was followed by Dennis Rodal, ELG Haniel Metals Corp., who discussed scrap selection for quality steels. Concluding the first day was a presentation by Allen Chan, Praxair Inc., entitled “Non-Induction Melting.”
The second day started with presentations regarding steel refining and solidification and then casting in the foundry. Mark Suer, AK Steel Research, then presented “Casting of Specialty Steel Ingots,” followed by “Introduction to Remelting of Specialty Steel Ingots.” A “Refractory 101” presentation was given by Timothy Leisure of HarbisonWalker International, which was followed by a discussion on refractory shapes by Andy Pinskey, Holland Manufacturing Corp.
A tour of Outokumpu Stainless USA LLC, located in Calvert, Ala., USA, was held the following morning.
