Travel Grants - Back to top
Both the AIST Foundation and the Material Advantage Student Program have funds available for travel assistance for full-time undergraduate students who wish to attend AISTech 2007. Material Advantage funds are available to Material Advantage Chapters, AIST Foundation funds are available to individual students. Funds are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. The number of travel grants available is limited, so apply early by completing the Travel Grant Application.
- Material Advantage Chapter Travel Grants — Material Advantage Chapters may apply for a grant that will provide up to $500 to reimburse travel expenses submitted by the faculty advisor following the conference. Two or more students must attend.
- Individual Student Travel Grants — Individual full-time undergraduate students can apply for a grant which will provide up to $250 to cover travel expenses submitted following the conference.
The AIST Australia Member Chapter is currently offering travel expense reimbursement to undergraduate student members traveling from Australia to attend AISTech 2007 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Students will be reimbursed for up to US$350 in travel expenses, and the AISTech 2007 student registration fee (if applicable). Student identification and conference registration are required. AIST offers students the opportunity to earn $50.00 per session while attending AISTech as a session monitor. Questions should be directed to Ken Landau at klandau@aist.org.

AIST has issued a challenge to all universities! The university with the highest number of students in attendance at AISTech 2007 will receive $500.

Student Plant Tour – Nucor Steel, Crawfordsville, Ind. willhost a student plant tour. All students registered will be transported to the plant from Indianapolis at 1:00 p.m. Following the tour, Nucor will treat the students to dinner and fun at Jillian’s, located just 2 blocks from conference hotels.
Long pants (preferably jeans) and hard sole shoes that cover the entire foot are required. Nucor will provide hard hats, safety glasses and ear plugs.

Student Plant Tour – Steel Dynamics, Inc., Pittsboro, Ind. will host a student plant tour. All student registered will be transported to the plant from Indianapolis at 11:00 a.m. for lunch and a tour, to return following the tour in time to attend student orientation. - Orientation — Join students from other universities for Orientation in Ballroom 2-4 of the Marriott at 4:30 p.m. followed by a casual dinner and reception at 5:30 p.m. The Orientation will provide an update on AIST and information on the valuable technical and networking social events available to students at AISTech. An AIST member will discuss the iron and steel industry’s opportunities for young professionals as well as the importance of membership in AIST.
- Steel Scavenger Hunt — Conference scavenger hunt forms will be distributed at Orientation on Sunday, May 6. Students will be asked to find information about AISTech 2007, iron and steel-related companies, and AIST and its members. Completed forms must be turned in by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 7 in order to receive a ticket to enter a drawing for prizes.

- Technical Sessions — Students are encouraged to attend the Howe Memorial Lecture in the Wabash Room of the Convention Center from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
- Senior Project Presentation Contest — Gain valuable presentation experience and a chance at great cash prizes by entering this new contest. The “Senior Project Presentation Contest” will take place at AISTech 2007 in Indianapolis, Ind. on Monday, May 7, 2007 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., located in room 113 of the Indiana Convention Center. The Association for Iron & Steel Technology invites you to participate.
- This contest will begin (up to 16 participants) from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. and continue at 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. in the Convention Center.
- All senior undergraduate students who have completed a senior project required for graduation may register to participate in this contest. The topic of the project is unlimited but should be technical in nature. Students will be assigned 15 minute sessions each to present their senior project. Participants will be judged on overall knowledge of project topic, thoroughness of the contest and presentation skills.
- Each participant will receive $300 toward travel expenses, and the presentations receiving the top scores will receive cash prizes, $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place.

- Town Hall Forum and Lunch — Plan to attend the Town Hall Forum, 8:30–11:30 a.m. in the Indiana Convention Center, featuring discussion among top industry executives on current steel industry concerns. Lunch will be provided in the Exhibit Hall for all conference registrants following this event.
- Technical Sessions — Students are encouraged to attend the many technical sessions of varying topics.
