Purpose Statement

The Emerging Leaders Alliance seeks to foster leadership in the engineering and scientific community through professional leadership training. The Leadership model is defined as the art, science, and craft of influencing people to accomplish tasks and improve organizations. In addition to technical competency, today’s engineering leaders need broad skills to meet the real problems facing mankind, including energy, sustainability and health care.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Emerging Leaders Alliance is to provide an interdisciplinary global community of learning and leadership training for emerging engineering and scientific professionals, promoting the development of great leaders to guide our professions in addressing the needs of people in the 21st century.

Through intensive, in-person training sessions and a continuing online community forum, the Alliance seeks to build upon its mission by:

  1. Promoting career advancement of professionals
  2. Promoting the engagement of engineering and scientific leadership in societal concerns

Annual Capstone Program
October 8–10, 2009
The Hyatt Regency Hotel • Reston, Virginia 20190

The annual capstone program includes advanced online components to maximize the attendees’ participation in the full two-day leadership program and includes:

  • Bob Heavers: Social Styles Icebreaker and Conflict Resolution/Leading in Conflict
  • Jan Ferri-Reed: Team Building and Leveraging Multiple Generations in the Workplace
  • Ann Atkinson: Critical Thinking & Problem Solving and Risk Management
  • Peter Parker: Social Responsibility and Ethical Decision-Making for Emerging Leaders

Participant Criteria/Guidelines

  1. Industry and Government Agencies: Rising or current middle management (or equivalent) with demonstrated potential for upper level/executive management. Rising or current technical staff leaders (e.g., Associate Research Consultant, Research Specialist, etc.) with the demonstrated potential for corporate fellow (or equivalent) and/or Technical Society/National Academy Fellow.
  2. Universities (i.e., professors): Six or more years of experience (including leading research groups or centers) with aspirations for university leadership positions (Department Chair, Dean or higher) and/or demonstrated potential for Technical
    Society/National Academy Fellow.
  3. A Record of Achievement: This includes individual
    contributions (e.g., published papers, awards, etc.) and organizational success (e.g., promotions within an organization, documented success of the individual’s group, etc.).
  4. A member in good standing of a partnering
    professional society.
  5. Preference to those organizations (e.g., companies,
    academic institution, government agency, etc.) that do not have an internal leadership program
    (e.g., smaller companies or larger organizations
    with only management training).
  6. Unique opportunity to expand the Emerging Leaders
    Alliance (e.g., international participant).
