Application of Roll Gap Lubrication, Work Roll Cooling and
Antipeeling Systems in Hot Rolling Mills
Michael J. Peretic, Principal Engineer — Process Technology, SMS Demag Inc., Pittsburgh, Pa.; Juergen Seidel, Deputy General Manager — Hot Rolling, and Stephan Kraemer, General Manager — Hot and Cold Rolling Technology, SMS Demag AG, Hilchenbach, Germany
Mill chatter and work roll peeling can damage work roll surfaces, adversely affecting strip surface quality. This paper discusses how roll gap lubrication, work roll cooling and antipeeling systems can reduce the
potential for chatter and increase the life of work roll surfaces. |

No. 2 Hot Mill Profile/Flatness Performance and Finishing
Mill Work Roll Practices
Adelmo F. Monaco, Reliability Coordinator — Hot Mill, and Graham W. Stephen, Process Automation — Hot Mill, Dofasco Inc., Hamilton, Ont., Canada (adelmo_monaco@dofasco.ca)
A systematic approach to roll reuse at Dofasco reduced operating costs, decreased roll inventory costs and reduced capital expenditures. Effective use of new roll technologies also helped to achieve operational cost savings without sacrificing product quality. |

Effect of Boron Addition on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Low-carbon Steels
Y.R. Cho and S.I. Kim, Automotive Steel Products Research Group, POSCO, Cheonnam, Korea; and B.S. Seong, Neutron Physics Dept., HANARO Center, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), Daejeon, Korea (yrcho@posco.co.kr)
This paper investigates the effect of boron addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of
commercial low-carbon steels. The results of mill trials with boron-added low-carbon steel are compared to those for conventional formable steel. |
Roll Cool-down Facility at the ISG Burns Harbor Hot Strip Mill
Bruce Bramfitt (left), Senior Research Consultant, and Richard Perry (right), International Steel Group (bbramfitt@intlsteel.com)
A roll cool-down facility was put in operation at the ISG Burns Harbor plant to quickly and efficiently cool work roll mates. This paper describes some of the
features of the facility and performance data on ground rolls cooled in the facility. |
