Evraz Group announced that it restarted Blast Furnace No. 3 at its Zapsib plant in Novokuznetsk, Russia.
Evraz idled the Zapsib plant’s 3000-m3 Blast Furnace No. 3, which had an annual pig iron capacity of 2.16 million tonnes, on October 29, 2008 as part of its effort to match production with actual market demand. Since then, the furnace and adjacent production units have undergone an extensive overhaul,
With the restart of Blast Furnace No. 3, the Zapsib plant’s total capacity will reach 6.5 million tonnes of pig iron per annum. The company’s Russian operations’ annual steelmaking capacity will reach 13.5 million tonnes of crude steel, which is approximately 2 million tonnes less than last year’s capacity due to production optimization.
Following the restart of the Zapsib plant’s Blast Furnace No. 3, the company’s Russian steelmaking division will be running at its full capacity. This will enable Evraz to further increase its exports of semi-finished products, including slabs and billets, to meet demand in the Asian markets.
