SteelBenchmarker: HRB Prices Wallow

10/30/2013 - The bi-monthly SteelBenchmarker™ United States HRB spot price for 28 October 2013 rose 0.8% to US$729 per metric tonne for the second consecutive time.
The Western European HRB price rose 0.7% to US$611 per metric tonne (on a Euro basis, it fell 1.3%) after falling last time. The World export HRB price slipped 0.2% to US$555 per metric tonne for the third consecutive time. The Chinese HRB price fell 1.6% to US$480 per metric tonne for the fourth consecutive time.

In its one hundred eighty second report, the SteelBenchmarker released 11 steel product and 3 USA scrap prices. Of these, here are four benchmark prices for hot-rolled band for 28 October 2013:

USA – US$729 per metric tonne (US$661 per net ton), FOB the mill – up US$6 per metric tonne from US$723 (US$656 ton) two weeks ago, up US$77 from the recent low of US$652 (US$591 ton) on 22 October 2012 and up US$176 from the low of US$553 per metric tonne (US$502 ton) on 23 November 2009. It is down US$241 per metric tonne from the recent high of US$970 (US$880 ton) on 28 March 2011 and down US$474 (39.4%) from the record peak of US$1,203 per metric tonne (US$1,091 ton) on 28 July 2008.

China – US$480 per metric tonne, ex-works — down US$8 per metric tonne from US$488 two weeks ago, up US$33 per metric tonne from the recent low of US$447 on 10 September 2012 and up US$73 from the low of US$407 per metric tonne on 12 October 2009. It is down US$157 per metric tonne from the recent high of US$637 on 22 August 2011 and down US$253 (34.5%) from the record peak of US$733 per metric tonne on 14 July 2008.

Western Europe – US$611 (€443) per metric tonne, ex-works — up US$4 per metric tonne from US$607 (€449) two weeks ago (on a Euro basis, it was down €6), up US$20 (down €22) from the recent low of US$591 (€465) on 12 November 2012 and up US$40 (up €62) from the low of US$571 (€381) per metric tonne on 23 November 2009. It is down US$241 (€162) per metric tonne from the recent high of US$852 (€605) on 28 March 2011 and down US$593 (49.3%) (€313) (41.4%) from the record peak of US$1,204 (€756) per metric tonne on 14 July 2008.

World Export Price – US$555 per metric tonne, FOB the port of export — down US$1 per metric tonne from US$556 two weeks ago, up US$23 from the recent low of US$532 on 8 October 2012 and up US$59 from the low of US$496 per metric tonne on 9 November 2009. It is down US$247 per metric tonne from the recent high of US$802 on 14 February 2011 and down US$558 (50.1%) from the record peak of US$1,113 per metric tonne on 28 July2008.
