New Iranian Mill Begins Melting, Casting Operations

9/12/2017 - A greenfield steel mill in the Iranian province of Yazd has been successfully started up, according to the primary technology supplier on the project.

According to Tenova, the Chadormalu Mining & Industrial Co. billet plant consists of a Tenova 170-ton electric arc furnace (EAF) and ladle furnace as well as a 6-strand caster from SMS Concast.

Equipped with a 160 MVA transformer, the EAF is designed to annually produce 1.2 million metric tons worth of billets from cold direct-reduced iron. The plant plans to eventually install a vacuum degasser that will allow for production of special steel grades for both the domestic and export markets.

In addition to the equipment, Tenova provided a comprehensive plant engineering package that included the overall plant process, logistics, and basic engineering of auxiliary plants and equipment.

"This greenfield project was developed with a strong cooperation with local subcontractors, who supplied steel structures, distribution network and auxiliary equipment following Tenova’s basic engineering. Parts of the EAF and ladle furnace were built in Iran based on Tenova detailed engineering," the company said.
