Steel Distributors Set Up Shop at Southern U.S. Mills

5/8/2024 - Two steel distributors are opening facilities at two southern U.S. sheet mills, according to announcements.

Thyssenkrupp Materials Services is opening a US$32 million service center in Sinton, Texas, home to Steel Dynamics Inc.’s newest facility. Meanwhile, Majestic Steel USA is starting a service center and mass distribution facility at Nucor Corp.’s Hickman plant in Arkansas.

The Majestic Steel facility encompasses 513,633 sq. ft. and houses four processing lines. It has slitting, cut-to-length, multi-blanking and spin-down capabilities.

"We're creating the most efficient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly steel service center and supply chain in the heart of steel production excellence. Our strategic footprint optimizes service levels and minimizes costs. As we activate our state-of-the-art processing lines, we're dedicated to shaping a more sustainable steel industry,” said Majestic Steel president and chief executive officer Todd Leebow.

Meanwhile, at Sinton, thyssenkrupp is starting up what is its fourth U.S. service center.

"North America is an important growth market for us, which is why we are continuously expanding our position as a strategic partner to the automotive industry," said Martin Stillger, chief executive officer of thyssenkrupp Materials Services.

The facility will primarily service customers in automotive, HVAC and construction.

"The logistically favorable location – including direct rail and port access – in Sinton allows us to bridge the gap to markets that were dependent on distant suppliers. We are expanding our geographic reach in high-growth markets with a high demand for steel," said Steve McGee, chief operating officer of thyssenkrupp Steel Services.
