Posco Again Recognized for Sustainability Report

At the Korean Sustainability Conference 2009 on October 14, Posco’s sustainability report won the grand prize in the manufacturing sector. It was the second consecutive year Posco has won the award.

The Korea Standards Association has been assessing Korean companies’ sustainability reports and sustainability index jointly with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) since 2008. The GRI is an international research institute that studies sustainability and provides guidelines for sustainability reports in cooperation with the UNEP.

The assessment was conducted via an online evaluation model that the GRI developed for interested parties to grade sustainability reports. From August to September, online polls were carried out on 42 sustainability reports, and the assessment team collected 2247 surveys from economic, social, and environment experts.

GRI Chairman Earnst Ligteringen, who attended the awards ceremony, stressed that the publication of sustainability reports makes companies effectively link their sustainability management strategies and related activities.

Posco previously was picked as the best company in the steel industry at the 2009 SAM-DJSI assessment, and the company also won the grand prize in the sustainability sector at the 2009 Global Green Management Excellence Awards on September 29.

Posco has been publishing sustainability reports since 2004 to introduce the company’s sustainable achievements in the areas of the economy, the environment, and society. Its sustainability report can be viewed at its website in both e-book form and as a PDF file.
