ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe Recruits 477 New Apprentices
10/21/2009 - At the beginning of the 2009/10 fiscal year, 477 young people started an apprenticeship in the Steel Europe business area, bringing the total to 1667. The apprenticeship training rate is now 5.6%.
At the beginning of the current 2009/10 fiscal year, 477 young people started an apprenticeship in the Steel Europe business area, bringing the total number of apprentices to 1667. The apprenticeship training rate is now 5.6%, which according to ThyssenKrupp is significantly higher than the average level at peer companies.
ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG with its locations in Duisburg, Bochum, Dortmund, Eichen-Ferndorf, and Finnentrop alone recruited 333 apprentices at the beginning of the new training year. They are training for careers in 28 industrial and 10 commercial and IT occupations.
"We have had a tradition of training well in excess of our own needs for many years, and as a premium training provider we accept responsibility for the region. We stand by this commitment in the current economic crisis," said Dieter Kroll, Chief Human Resources Officer of ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe.
ThyssenKrupp says that the aim of the apprenticeship training program is to secure and support young talent on a sustainable basis to counter the problem of skilled staff shortages during an economic upswing.
The downside of training beyond its own requirements, the company noted, is that permanent employment cannot be offered to all those who complete an apprenticeship. But as part of its "ProFuture" program launched in 2006, ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG undertook the goal to place a total of 1000 apprentices onto its workforce up to the year 2013.

"On a prorated basis over the full term, we have already exceeded the target of offering jobs to 1000 qualified apprentices," said Kroll. With the 177 apprentices taken onto the workforce in the past fiscal year, a total of 596 young people have been offered permanent employment since 2006/07.
"In the 2009/2010 fiscal year, which has just begun, 110 people completing apprenticeships will be offered permanent jobs and a further 70 will be employed under limited contracts," said Kroll.
ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe also offers support to young people studying for degrees. More than 100 apprentices are currently receiving financial support and expert guidance under the company's "Young Potential" program.
In addition, since 2003 the company has been running the "Chance" program for young people who fail to meet the recruitment criteria the first time they apply. The program prepares them for the next round of applications and for an apprenticeship in an industrial/technical occupation.

"126 young people have taken part in the project since it was first launched. Of these, 78 went on to start an apprenticeship at ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG and 19 obtained contracts with other companies," said Dr. Rudolf-Carl Meiler, Head of Personnel Development.
For fiscal 2009/10, 18 more participants have been accepted into the program.
