Recognizing steel industry excellence, the President’s Award Breakfast program consists of the presentation of prestigious AIST Board of Directors Awards, including AIST’s Steelmaker of the Year, followed by a keynote presentation from Roger Newport, chief executive officer, AK Steel. His presentation is titled Providing Innovative and Sustainable Steel Solutions.

Roger Newport was named chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors of AK Steel Corp. effective 1 January 2016. Newport started his career with the company in 1985 in the accounting department. He advanced through a number of increasingly responsible finance, sales and marketing roles at the corporate headquarters and the company’s Middletown Works. He was named controller in 2001 and chief accounting officer in 2004. He advanced to vice president, business planning and development in 2010, and vice president, finance and chief financial officer in 2012. He was named senior vice president, finance and chief financial officer in 2014, and executive vice president, finance and chief financial officer in 2015. Newport serves as vice chairman of the board of directors of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), chairman of the AISI Policy and Planning Committee, and member of the Finance Committee, the Steel Market Development Institute CEO Group and North American Steel Council. He is a member of the executive committee of the board of directors of the World Steel Association, and a member of its audit committee. Newport is a member of the Washington, D.C., USA-based Business Roundtable. He is also a member of Financial Executives International. He was recognized as the 2017 Steelmaker of the Year by AIST. Newport serves on the Business Advisory Council for the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati. Newport holds a B.B.A. degree in accounting from the University of Cincinnati and an M.B.A. with honors from Xavier University.
