Charter Steel – Cleveland
Charter Steel is the largest privately owned steel producer in North America, with melting, rolling and finishing facilities in Wisconsin and Ohio. Its focus is on producing high-quality products for automotive and industrial applications, including carbon and alloy steel wire, rod and special bar quality products. Charter Steel’s Cleveland Works lies 10 minutes south of downtown Cleveland in Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio. This facility produces and ships coiled special bar quality (SBQ) rod and bar as well as cut-to-length SBQ bar to a wide variety of manufacturers and steel distributors throughout North America. Originally part of the American Steel and Wire unit of United States Steel Corporation, the Cleveland plant was purchased by Charter Steel in 2002. Since then, major improvements and additions have been made to the facility, including a state-of-the-art electric arc furnace, tank degasser, ladle metallurgy and reheating station, and 4-strand continuous billet caster. The investments continued in 2019, with the completion and commissioning of the most technologically advanced SBQ rolling line for cut-to-length bar in North America. With this latest improvement, Charter has invested more than US$500 million in the Cleveland facility in the last 15 years.
