The Port of Brownsville is the only deepwater seaport located on the U.S.-Mexico border, providing a strategic logistics hub for a host of multi-national manufacturing centers located across North America. This logistical advantage has catapulted the port as the major gateway for steel into Mexico, moving more than 4.6 million tons of steel commodities in 2022. This volume is projected to increase to more than 5 million tons in 2023. Class 1 rail service to and from the port is provided by Canadian Pacific Kansas City, Union Pacific and BNSF Railway. On-port rail service is provided by an agreement with OmniTRAX.

Cleveland-Cliffs is the largest flat-rolled steel producer in North America. Founded in 1847 as a mine operator, Cliffs also is the largest manufacturer of iron ore pellets in North America. With a history spanning 123 years, Gerdau is Brazil's largest steel producer, one of the leading producers of long steel in the Americas and of special steel in the world. In Brazil, Gerdau also produces flat steel and iron ore for its own use. Gerdau also has a new business division, Gerdau Next, which fosters entrepreneurship in segments adjacent to the steel industry.
