Rod and Bar Rolling — A Practical Training Seminar

The 2015 Rod and Bar Rolling — A Practical Training Seminar was held on 23–26 February 2015 in Charleston, S.C., USA. This was the Rod & Bar Rolling Technology Committee (RBRTC)’s fifth annual training seminar, and 66 AIST members were in attendance. Chris Snow, rolling mill manager for Nucor Steel–Berkeley, was the keynote speaker.

Following the keynote presentation, Matt Blitch, Nucor Steel–Nebraska, and Gary Henderson, Nucor Steel–Berkeley, presented “Changing the Mindset on Safety for a Safer Environment.”  The next presentation was “Reheat Furnace — The First Stand in the Mill,” by Mike Finan, Andritz Bricmont Inc. Joe Kennedy of Quad Engineering Inc. presented “Basic Rolling Theory,” followed by “Rolling Mill Setup,” by Kevin Barbee of Danieli Corp., and “Rod/Bar Products and Applications,” by Bob Greuter of Danieli Corp.
The second day began with a presentation on work rolls by William Posey, Sintermet LLC. Kevin Barbee then discussed “Torque and the Rolling Stand.” Barbee was then joined by Dave Wellington for a presentation on cold product down-cut shears. Steve Pegg of Russula presented “Drives and Automation for Long Product Rolling Mills,” followed by a panel discussion and seminar review. A tour of Nucor Steel–Berkeley’s rolling mill the following morning completed the seminar program.
The 2016 Rod and Bar Rolling Seminar will be scheduled for 22–25 February 2016 in San Antonio, Texas, USA, with CMC Steel Texas serving as host plant. Ty Hall, RBRTC past chair, will serve as the keynote speaker.
