Conference Details: 6–10 February 2017, Fort Worth, TX, USA

Fabio Shimono, meltshop manager, Gerdau Long Steel North America Midlothian Mill, was presented with a plaque of appreciation for his keynote presentation during Modern Electric Furnace Steelmaking — A Practical Training Seminar (left to right): Stephan Ferenczy, Shimono, Lauren Jellison and Brett McGee.

Conference Highlights: Gerdau Long Steel North America Midlothian Mill served as the host plant for the 23rd annual EAF training seminar. The keynote speaker was Fabio Shimono, meltshop manager, Gerdau Long Steel North America Midlothian Mill.
For the 23rd consecutive year, Larry Heaslip, Interflow Tech Services, and Jeremy Jones, CIX LLC, anchored the training seminar program, providing expertise in electric steelmaking. Sam Matson, Commercial Metals Company Americas, informed the attendees about chemical and electrical energy inputs with the EAF performance and later environmental operations for the EAF.
This year’s program featured two new presentations from ESTC members. ESTC chair Stephan Ferenczy, Steel Dynamics Inc. – Structural and Rail Division, discussed preventive maintenance requirements for the electric arc furnace, and foundations with mechanical, electrical, injection equipment and safety hazards identified. The second new presentation was from Zane Voss of Voss Metallurgical Solutions LLC, titled “Modern Electric Steelmaking.” Voss’ presentation discussed today’s EAF operations, where it is necessary to get all of the furnace components working in sync and then to optimize the process.
Seminar topics addressed on the second day were scrap selection, LMF operations, as well as tap-to-cast operations, concluding with an historic perspective on EAF production and economics. The third day concentrated on EAF regulations, gas/carbon injection systems and finally electrode manufacturing and usage.
