Sheet Processing and Finishing Lines — A Practical Training Seminar

Conference Details: 17–21 September 2017, Ypsilanti, Mich., USA

Terry Charters, Stelco, presented an overview of process lines.

Conference Highlights: The AIST Rolling and Processing Technology Division was proud to modernize a class that had not been seen in more than 15 years. With over 26 speakers and panelists, the class provided extensive knowledge to 142 attendees. At the conclusion of the course, the attendees also had the opportunity to tour AK Steel – Dearborn Works.
The conference started off with a welcome and opening remark by Chad Donovan, SMS Technical Services LLC. He discussed the revitalization of this course and wished attendees good luck with absorbing all the information.
This training course covered many different process and finish lines. The first half of the seminar focused on the most prominent lines: pickling, annealing, galvanizing, plating, painting, temper rolling, tension leveling and slitting/sidetrimming. Equipment function and use became a topic later on, covering entry and exit equipment, as well as oiling, coil marking and surface inspection.
The training seminar had a panel discussion made up of Ron Radzilowski, AK Steel Corp.; Amy Woods, Steel Dynamics Inc. – Flat Roll Group Butler Division; and Stavros Fountoulakis, ArcelorMittal Global R&D. The panel, moderated by Peter Urcheck, Big River Steel, focused on strip quality and the extensive work that goes into both diagnosing and solving quality problems in a steel mill environment.
On the final day of the conference, the group was able to hear from Rob Comstock, AK Steel Corp., about the upgrades to the Dearborn galvanizing line for producing next-generation steels before going on the tour to see the improvements firsthand.
