Environmental Solutions: Water Management

Conference Details: 17–18 October 2018, Indianapolis, Ind., USA

Dustin Abramson described to the group what they were going to see at the Belmont Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Kyle Edwards, ArcelorMittal Dofasco and Environmental Technology Committee (ETC) chair, discussed the functions of the ETC and encouraged participants to get involved. He also challenged the group to write down their issues and questions they hoped to have answered at the conference and post them on the wall for all to see.
Mike Brooks, Steel Dynamics Inc. – Engineered Bar Products Division, then discussed Clean Water Act compliance and permitting, focusing on not only the federal level but the state level as well.
Other presentations throughout the day focused on fundamentals of water system chemistry; corrosion control; cooling tower design, operation and maintenance; microbiological activity control; and energy efficiency improvements for cooling water circuits.
The second day began with a tour of Citizens Energy Group’s Belmont Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant. This facility is able to treat 300 million gallons per day and is one of the largest water treatment facilities in the world. The group was able to see much of the facility, including both the chlorine and ultraviolet disinfection areas.
After returning from the tour, the group heard a series of presentations focused on different filtration and removal methods and equipment. Finally, a few case studies were presented on water treatment reuse technologies and implementations of zero process wastewater programs. John Cioffi closed out the conference, congratulating all of the presenters and participants for making this training a success.
The ETC would like to thank John Cioffi for all the effort put into planning this conference as well as sponsors Baltimore Aircoil Co.; NALCO Water, An Ecolab Company; and Monroe Environmental Corp.
