Conference Details: 25 February –1 March 2018, Mobile, Ala., USA
The hot rolling seminar is an in-depth course offered every other year, which now also includes a separate plate rolling track, for this unique type of rolling mill. With more than 30 separate presentation modules included as part of the training curriculum, the four-day class also provided tours of both types of mills, the hot strip (at AM/NS Calvert LLC in Calvert, Ala., USA) and the plate (at SSAB Alabama Inc. in Axis, Ala., USA).
Tyler Holtzinger, manager, hot strip mill maintenance at AM/NS Calvert LLC, was the keynote speaker.
Holtzinger provided an overview of AM/NS Calvert LLC and its hot strip mill, and discussed the various routes of its incoming slab supply via rail and barge.
Topics were presented in a production flow sequence that many attendees found quite similar to their home mills. Material was provided from an operational, and then separately from an equipment, focus with early training on the first day showing the metallurgical foundation behind today’s methods used for producing the latest in high-strength, low-alloy and ultrahigh-strength, low-alloy steels.
Participants came away with a full binder (or by choice, a thumb drive) containing each of the presentations and ample opportunities to network with the crowd of professionals in attendance.
Sponsors Spraying Systems Co. and Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa Inc. hosted informational booths each day.
