Doug Matthews is an accomplished steel industry leader with more than three decades of experience, driving operational excellence and growth worldwide. Most recently, he agreed to lead Orion Steel as president and chief executive officer in August 2025, bringing a proven track record of driving sustainable quality improvements, inspiring his teams, advancing workplace innovation, strengthening customer partnerships and prioritizing safety. Matthews began his steelmaking career in 1988 with United States Steel Corporation, where he steadily advanced through a wide range of operational and leadership roles in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. His dedication to excellence and his craft earned him larger responsibilities within U. S. Steel and even international leadership opportunities. In 2006, he was appointed president and general director of U. S. Steel Serbia before returning to North America to serve as president and general manager of U. S. Steel Canada. For the next decade, Matthews held several senior executive positions at U. S. Steel until he was ultimately named chief commercial and technology officer in 2020. In this role, he led the transition from a traditional commercial setup to one that more closely connects U. S. Steel teams to create better solutions for customers. Before joining Orion Steel, Matthews served as chief growth officer at Guardhat Inc., a pioneer in safety technology that helps industrial companies reduce workplace risks through engineered safety controls. Matthews holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from The Pennsylvania State University and an M.B.A. from Duquesne University.
