Digital Transformation for Coil Handling and Packing Logistics
Jagannathan Rajagopalan, Pesmel South Asia
Today, industrial logistics is so dynamic optimizing the process cost as well as assuring total quality flanked by absolute safety and the fastest return on investment (ROI). Digital transformation is the key for such modern logistics systems and prerequisites for standardization on which most of the steel plants are qualified today. A digitalized packing system with coil car system and automation is one such example wherein automatic handling, tracking, diagnosis, banding, wrapping and labeling could assure more throughput with desired protection to the coils against chemical and moisture corrosion as well as mechanical damages during handling and transportation until the end use. This could ensure a “touchless” packing system which is the need of the hour in automobile and other industrial needs. Further, with a suitable packing line configuration, the coil could be transferred from the process line to the shipping bay without the need for a separate coil interbay transfer system. The coil is ready to be loaded to the customer truck without the need for a large WIP storage as a modern packing system could be tailored to the output rate per hour of the process lines with least packing cycle time per coil. A typical case study on automatic tracking, transportation and packing systems will be presented, detailing the steps and procedures in configuring the system summarizing the justification on such investment with fastest ROI.
