ArcelorMittal to Idle Indiana Blast Furnace

11/13/2019 - ArcelorMittal has decided to put the No. 3 blast furnace at its Indiana Harbor works in Indiana on idle and await an improved market rather than undergo an expensive, near-term reline, reports The Times newspaper of northwest Indiana.
According to the newspaper, the furnace is to be idled later this month.

"The furnace will be taken down in a safe and orderly fashion and preserved to maintain our capacity for when customer demand merits the necessary capital investments for a new campaign," ArcelorMittal spokesman Bill Steers told the newspaper.

The facility’s two other blast furnaces, No. 7 at Indiana Harbor East and No. 4 at Indiana Harbor West, will continue operation.
