Supersized Screw Press Takes Flight at Chinese Forging Operation

11/18/2019 - Chinese aviation components maker AVIC Shaanxi Hongyuan Aviation Forging recently celebrated the inauguration of the world’s largest clutch-operated screw forge press, according to the machine’s builder, SMS group.

In a statement, SMS group said the 2,900 metric ton screw press boasts a gross power of 27,000 kJ and a screw diameter of 1,330 mm. The press is designed to provide extreme forces needed to create turbine blades and other aircraft components.

“By investing in the new press, the company intends to increase its production volume and component portfolio, and supply the aircraft industry with forgings produced on the new press from high-alloy steel, titanium and nickel-based alloys,” SMS group said.

AVIC Shaanxi Hongyuan manufactures structural components, aviation discs and turbine blades for China’s aviation market.

The press is the third of this size that SMS group has delivered.
