Italian Long Products Maker Reveals Plans for New Rolling Mill

5/28/2019 - Nucor Corp.’s Italian joint venture, Duferdofin-Nucor, will build an EUR150 million rolling mill in the province of Brescia, the company has announced.

In a statement, Duferdofin-Nucor said the new mill will bring melting and rolling operations under one roof at its San Zeno Naviglio plant and take the company’s systemwide capacity to more than 1 million metric tons.

“This investment is the culmination of a long process of continuous improvements which all Duferdofin-Nucor teammates have been committed to making. Our goal is to make Duferdofin-Nucor even better, more profitable and more sustainable in the interest of all stakeholders,”   Duferdofin-Nucor chairman Antonio Gozzi.

The mill will make beams and other rolled products. Duferdofin-Nucor’s existing rolls mills in Pallanzeno and Giammoro will be focused on producing special profiles and serving the Mediterranean markets.

“The new mill, strategically located in northern Italy, will be … a low-cost producer in Europe. The plant will benefit from the most modern technologies, will have limited environmental impact with significant energy savings, and will consume energy from renewable sources through a long-term power purchase agreement,” the company said.

The mill is to enter service in mid-2022. Duferdofin-Nucor is a 50-50 joint venture between Nucor and Duferco.
