Canadian Steel Producers Net-Zero Goal Set to Be Achieved by 2050

3/4/2020 - Members of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) aim to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, the trade group announced Wednesday.

“We know that climate change is a global challenge that requires our collective action.  While net zero is an aspirational goal, we believe we can achieve our vision of a low-carbon steel sector if we work in collaboration with governments, stakeholders, customers, and the supply chain,” said CSPA president Catherine Cobden.

The effort, called the Climate Call to Action, calls on members to create partnerships and research collaborations as well as to develop and adopt breakthrough clean technologies and innovative products.

“The scale of the challenge is significant but by working with others, we believe we can find new ways to meet this challenge,” said Cobden.

Since 1990, Canadian steel producers have reduced their emissions by 25% by improving energy efficiency and by ensuring best practices across their operations, the association said.
