HKM Enlists Paul Wurth for Syngas Project

5/20/2021 - Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann GmbH has chosen SMS group’s Paul Wurth unit to provide the engineering for a syngas generation and injection plant that would serve its two blast furnaces.

According to Paul Wurth, the project at the German mill entails installation of a syngas plant that would convert high-calorific plastic materials and waste wood chips into carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The plant would be made up of approximately 100 integrated syngas reformers. It also would incorporate cooling, compression and transportation to a new coke oven gas compressor station as well as dust-free transportation of ashes.

“For Paul Wurth, the present project is an important step with regard to the market recognition of the company’s readily available technologies for CO2 emission reduction from blast furnace operations, leading the way towards a carbon-neutral industrial renewal,” the company said.
