Texas EAF Dust Recycler Starts Operations

2/24/2023 - Startup EAF dust recycler Zinc Resources LLC has opened a US$100 million plant in Victoria, Texas, USA, the company reports.
The facility is designed to process 120,000 tons annually and will employ 50 people when it reaches full capacity. The company said its Waelz kiln facility is the first such facility to come on-line in the southern U.S. in over 15 years.

“Zinc Resources' state-of-the-art facility benefits steel mills by converting a hazardous byproduct of electric arc furnace production into two highly recyclable materials, Waelz zinc oxide, which is used by zinc smelters, and Waelz iron product, which is used as a cement additive and in road construction,” said Zinc Resources chief executive Ron Crittendon.

“We do this in an environmentally safe way, producing products that reduce dependence on mining and landfills,” he added.
The company said the plant is equipped with a number of environmental safety features, including a network of air emissions monitors, an air filtration system that continually holds dust under negative pressure throughout the production process, and a rubber-lined floor and foundation.

Additionally, the plant recycles all process water, including shower water, back into the production process.

“Zinc Resources is committed to the health and safety of its employees, its community, and to protecting the environment. We look forward to benefiting the Victoria community for many years to come.”
