Primetals Technologies, Midrex to Outfit Blastr Green Steel’s New Plant

7/9/2024 - Blastr Green Steel has chosen Primetals Technologies and Midrex Technologies Inc. as partners for its planned 2.5-million-metric-ton steel mill in Finland, according to PR Newswire.

The partnership includes the design of a direct reduced iron (DRI) plant, an electric arc furnace meltshop, an Arvedi ESP line, and a continuous pickling and galvanizing line. Primetals Technologies will develop the hydrogen-based DRI plant in collaboration with Midrex.
“This partnership marks a significant milestone in our journey toward sustainable steel production and decarbonizing the steel value chain. By combining our strengths with industry leaders, we are poised to drive innovation and shape the future of steel production,” said Mark Bula, chief executive of Blastr Green Steel.
The MIDREX H2™ plant will be a consortium of Midrex and Primetals Technologies and will be powered by up to 100% green hydrogen. It will produce hot DRI for direct charging to the steel mill, as well as hot briquetted iron (HBI).
Primetals Technologies will also supply a ladle furnace and an RH plant, a system to treat offgases and a plant to recover waste heat for the electric steel plant.
