Gestamp Signs With Salzgitter for Green Steel

6/6/2024 - Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH has signed a memorandum of understanding with automotive supplier Gestamp Automoción S.A. to supply it with steel made through its low-CO2 process and investigate the establishment of circularity routes.

In a statement, Salzgitter said Gestamp would receive steel produced by its Salzgitter Low-CO2 Steelmaking (SALCOS) program, which is based on direct reduction plants and electric arc furnaces. Additionally, the two will investigate the establishment of circularity routes that supply Salzgitter with scrap collected from Gestamp plants for the production of low-CO2 steel.

Gestamp is a long-standing partner of Salzgitter Flachstahl and primarily purchases hot-rolled and cold-rolled flat steel products.

“The partnership between Gestamp and Salzgitter supplying low-emission steel and the opportunity of establishing circularity routes to return scrap for the production of SALCOS is a progression toward the decarbonization of the industry, toward a net-zero car,” said Javier Imaz, chief purchasing officer at Gestamp.
