Cleveland-Cliffs Butler Works
Thursday, 7 May, 8 a.m.-Noon
Cleveland-Cliffs Butler Works produces electrical, stainless and carbon steel. The facility is the leading U.S. producer of high-silicon grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES), a critical material used in transformers and the electricity sector. Cliffs is committed to developing the next generation of hyper-efficient electrical steels to power more efficient transformers, generators and motors — including motors in hybrid and electric vehicles.
The steel melting operation uses an electric arc furnace, which feeds an argon-oxygen decarburization unit for specialty steels production. A ladle metallurgy furnace feeds two double-strand continuous casters. The operation also includes hot rolling, cold rolling and finishing operations.
Cleveland-Cliffs is currently undertaking the Steel Slab Electrified Induction Reheat Furnace Upgrade project at Butler Works. This project will electrify certain processes through the installation of four new induction reheat furnaces, replacing two existing natural-gas-fired slab reheat furnaces. The upgrade will support cleaner, more efficient production of electrical steels essential to the modern power grid.
