Wendell Carter

Retired – Executive Vice President of Technology, Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.

Wendell Carter retired in April 2025 after 42 years of continuous service in the iron and steel industry. Carter served as AIST president in 2017–2018 and has served on the AIST Foundation and executive boards. He is an AIST Distinguished Member and Fellow and an AIME Honorary Member. Early in his career (through the Iron & Steel Society), he contributed to 13 technical papers and was the 1997 recipient of the J.E. Johnson Award. During the first 20 years of his career, he held technical and managerial roles in blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace steelmaking. During the second 20+ years of his career, he held executive leadership positions in plant operations, plant and customer quality control, product and process research, scheduling and planning, facility optimization and projecting engineering. His career involved the product lines of hot briquetted iron, carbon and stainless light flat roll, plate, bar, and rail production. He has also had oversight positions responsible for mining, pelletizing and direct reduction. Carter holds a B.S. degree in metallurgical engineering from Iowa State University and an M.B.A. from Indiana University.
