History and Purpose

The AIST Bernard J. Fedak Award for Excellence in Project Management was established in 2026 to honor Bernard J. Fedak, 1996 AISE President, for his enduring commitment to advance project management expertise. The award recognizes exemplary achievement in the disciplined planning and effective delivery of capital investment programs within the iron and steel industry.

Nomination Process

Nominations shall be made by submitting the AIST Award Nomination Form. Three letters of endorsement, a biography and proposed citation are required with each nomination. One of the three required letters of endorsement must be from a steel producer company.

All nomination information is considered confidential to the AIST Board of Directors, the Awards & Recognition Program Committee and its subcommittees.

Qualifications

Nominees will have demonstrated:

  • Successful execution of capital investment programs within the iron and steel industry, grounded in sound planning, problem-solving, and business acumen
  • Disciplined integration of safety, cost, schedule, quality, and stakeholder alignment to achieve strategic and operational objectives
  • Effective communication and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to proactively manage risk
  • Active coaching, training, and development of personnel to build and sustain a high-performing project management organization 

Posthumous nominations are eligible if submitted within three years of the nominee’s death.

Selection Process

The AIST Project & Construction Management Technology Committee will solicit or nominate a minimum of three individuals for the award each year. The AIST Awards and Recognition Program Committee will select the recipient.
