About Bernard J. Fedak

Bernard J. Fedak had a 37-year career in the steel industry with J & L, LTV and lastly United States Steel Corporation. In 2005, he had his “first retirement” when he left U. S. Steel as managing director of engineering. He then took a position providing senior-level project consulting for Alcoa on their US$20 billion worldwide facility expansion program. His final employment was serving as project executive and vice president of operations for Kvaerner Construction on a US$2 billion, 600 MW coal-fired power plant in West Virginia.  

Fedak joined the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers (a predecessor of AIST) in 1968 and remains an AIST Life Member. He chaired the Pittsburgh chapter in 1986–1987, served on the board from 1991 to 1997, and was president of AISE in 1996. From 1997 to 2001, he served on the executive board of the Construction Industry Institute (CII). His contributions to project management and industry collaboration have been recognized by multiple honors, including CII’s Project Practice Implementer of the Year in 2002 and the CII Richard L. Tucker Leadership and Service Award in 2010.  

A longtime supporter of the University of Pittsburgh, Fedak was a member of the Mechanical Engineering Visiting Committee for more than 30 years. He received the Mechanical Engineering Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1995. Fedak received additional recognitions including the AIME Robert Earl McConnell Award for promoting excellence in project management in 2007 and the Metcalf Lifetime Distinguished Service Award from the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania in 2012.
