History and Purpose
Established in 1961 by the Blast Furnace, Coke Oven, and Raw Materials Committee of AIME, through a gift of the Koppers Company to honor Joseph Becker, a pioneer in the design of coke ovens. This award recognizes distinguished achievements in coal carbonization and coal technology. These achievements have improved the design, operation and productivity of coke plants and coal chemical recovery equipment and have led to greater efficiency in the use of coke in ironmaking. The recipient of the award must be over forty (40) years of age.
