Karim Badr obtained his B.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering from Alexandria University in 1996, followed by an M.Sc. degree in engineering management and materials science from Sheffield Hallam University in 2000. In 2007, he earned his Ph.D. in reduction metallurgy (reduction of iron ore fines by hydrogen plasma) from Montanuniversität Leoben. Badr began his professional career as a DRI operation engineer at Ezz Steel (formerly ANSDK) in Egypt. In 2004, he joined Montanuniversität Leoben as a research assistant for four years and became involved in the prominent EU project ULCOS, which focused on developing environmentally friendly steelmaking routes. After leaving academia in 2008, he held global marketing, sales and technical leadership positions at RHI Magnesita and Küttner. He currently serves as managing director of Metalurs Solutions. Badr is the chair of the youngest AIST Member Chapter, covering the MENA region. He also served as a member of the AIST Board of Directors from 2024 to 2026. In addition, he has authored several published papers on iron ore reduction, refractory solutions and electric arc furnace operations.
