During my recent internship at Steel Dynamics Inc. – Roanoke Bar Division as a caster and LMF metallurgist, I had the opportunity to interact with the entire mills process, design experiments, analyze data, and make process improvement suggestions to positively impact the division.
My primary project involved grade development of micro alloyed structural steels with the goal of understanding the properties and system interactions of Niobium grades with multiple micro-alloys. I was able to plan trial grades through research, speaking with operations, and limiting risk through careful scheduling. These trials were able to offer the mill insight and open a path for future cost savings in multiple areas of the process.
This internship has provided me with a lot of insight on how important it is to work with operations as a metallurgist, the time I spent on the floor before and during my trials vastly sped up my integration of theoretical knowledge and its practical applications.
