AIST Foundation Steel Intern Scholarship

Aiden C. Eckert

During the summer of 2025, I had the opportunity to intern at Nucor Steel West Virginia, located at the new mill under construction in Apple Grove, W.Va., USA. This marked my third summer interning with Nucor. Previously, I gained experience at Nucor’s divisions in Darlington, S.C., and Auburn, N.Y. Each internship has expanded my understanding of the steelmaking process and strengthened my appreciation for the industry. I was grateful to be part of a greenfield project and contribute to such a historic endeavor. Returning to Nucor meant being part of another division with incredible teammates and working within a culture that values ownership, safety and looking out for each other — qualities I’ve come to deeply respect through my previous experiences.

This summer, I served as an engineering intern in the hot mill department. My primary project focused on the coil handling area, specifically at the inspection station. I developed a system to manage the sampling process, which included determining a tracking method of samples and establishing a dedicated collection and storage area for samples. This project allowed me to apply both technical and organizational skills while contributing to the mill’s operational planning.

My role involved supporting design projects and assisting teammates with daily tasks. I was fortunate to learn from experienced teammates who guided me through the process operations of new equipment and systems. I was responsible for assisting my team with receiving and inspecting incoming equipment, which gave me valuable insight into the construction process and a deeper understanding of the equipment within the mill.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to tour other Nucor divisions, providing valuable insight into various product groups and manufacturing practices across the company.

I am sincerely thankful to AIST and Nucor for the opportunity to be part of such an exciting phase in both the company’s development and my own professional growth. This experience has further solidified my commitment to pursuing a career in the steel industry.
