Aime R. Esquivel-Arriaga
Ternium Mexico
During my internship at Ternium México in Monterrey, N.L., Mexico, I joined the processes team within the continuous casting area, which produces thin slabs to feed the hot rolling mill. Over the course of my internship, I had the opportunity to work on projects focused on process analysis and operational performance, while gaining firsthand experience in one of the most important stages of steel production.
My primary responsibility was supporting the development and validation of analytical tools designed to better understand the relationship between process conditions, mould lubrication behavior and product quality. My projects involved adapting equations for a mathematical model to quantify the friction in this specific process conditions, programming the real-time analysis in function of real time sensors and analyzing the resulting historic information; systematizing the recording of production data for the dimensions of the steel slabs and SEN properties, and learning how operational decisions are supported through data-driven approaches. Through this experience, I developed a deeper understanding of continuous casting processes and the challenges involved in maintaining high standards of quality and productivity.
One of the most valuable aspects of my internship was the opportunity to interact with professionals like my direct tutor, Larha Ramirez, whose guidance and willingness to share her knowledge played a fundamental role in my development throughout the internship. From observing her oversee the countless variables that influence the casting process to coordinating efforts across multiple departments, it provided valuable insight into the complexity of steel manufacturing and revealed aspects of industrial operations that extend far beyond the scope of classroom learning.
In addition to strengthening my technical and analytical skills, this experience significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth. Working in an industrial environment taught me the importance of effective communication, adaptability and continuous learning. Being able to observe real operational challenges also helped me understand the level of responsibility required in an industry where safety, but also quality and efficiency, are fundamental priorities.
Throughout my internship, I became increasingly aware of the impact that engineering and process improvement initiatives can have on daily operations. Seeing how every variable can impact the decisions made regarding the process conditions, which ultimately contribute to continuous improvement reinforced my interest in materials science and engineering. The experience allowed me to connect academic knowledge with practical applications and provided valuable insight into the professional environment I aspire to join after graduation.
I am sincerely grateful to Ternium México for providing me with the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and to participate in meaningful projects. I would also like to thank AIST for supporting students interested in the iron and steel industry and for creating opportunities that foster both professional development and industry engagement, and again, Larha, for her continuous support, patience, encouragement and mentorship throughout my internship. This was an enriching experience that strengthened my commitment to engineering and expanded my perspective on the challenges and opportunities within the steel sector.
