My internship at Nucor Steel Sedalia LLC provided me with a unique and invaluable introduction to the steel industry. Throughout the summer, I gained firsthand experience with Nucor’s culture and observed how its values are consistently demonstrated across the company. Above all, my experience can be summarized by two defining principles: safety and family. At Nucor employees work together, challenge one another, and grow together as a team. I experienced this culture from my very first day at the mill and throughout every day of my internship.
During the summer, I was assigned a variety of relevant and challenging projects that expanded both my technical knowledge and practical skills. These projects provided hands-on experience and allowed me to apply concepts I had learned in the classroom to real-world electrical engineering challenges within the steelmaking process. In addition to my projects, I had the opportunity to shadow and assist electricians and technicians throughout the mill. This experience gave me valuable insight into the daily responsibilities of maintenance personnel and the critical role they play in keeping operations running safely and efficiently.
While working on my projects and assisting the maintenance team, I experienced firsthand how Nucor embodies its culture of teamwork and family-oriented values. As someone who was new to the mill and had limited hands-on industrial experience, I had countless questions. Every teammate I approached was willing to take time away from their own work to explain concepts, answer questions, and help me understand the task at hand. I was continually impressed by the willingness of employees at every level of the organization to invest in my learning. Their patience and genuine desire to help an intern succeed made a lasting impression on me. In addition, teammates genuinely searched for my input and wanted to learn from me just as much. This was surprising to me that experienced electricians would care about my ideas.
My greatest takeaway from the summer was Nucor’s unwavering commitment to safety. From my first day at the mill, I was taught not only how to work safely but also how to recognize hazards and look out for the safety of those around me. This commitment is rooted in Nucor’s family-oriented culture and reflected in the company’s “Brother’s Keeper” philosophy. To me, being your “Brother’s Keeper” means taking responsibility for one another and ensuring that everyone returns home safely each day. Throughout my internship, I consistently felt that every teammate genuinely cared about my safety as well as their own. What impressed me most was the attention given to even the smallest aspects of safety, such as staying hydrated. During one job, for example, teammates stopped by simply to check on my mentor and me and bring us water. That level of care and attention to detail demonstrated that safety at Nucor is not just a policy — it is a deeply ingrained mindset that I will carry with me throughout my career.
Overall, my internship at Nucor Steel Sedalia LLC was an incredibly rewarding experience that strengthened both my technical abilities and my understanding of what makes an exceptional workplace culture. Beyond developing my engineering skills, I learned the importance of teamwork, continuous learning, innovation, and an uncompromising commitment to safety. The people I worked with and the values they demonstrated every day made a lasting impact on me, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of the Nucor family this summer.
