AIST Steel Intern Scholarship
Brock R. Smith
This past summer, I was able to work another incredible internship with Morgan Engineering. Morgan is based in Alliance, Ohio, USA, where they specialize in engineering unique material handling solutions. With Morgan’s ability to do both designing and manufacturing in the same facility, I was able to see the entire process and what it takes to design and build a crane. This experience has allowed me to gain a better understanding of not just cranes and their function in the steel industry, but also in the field of engineering in general. I was able to see real world examples of topics I had learned in school and apply some of the math and physics that I had learned from my dynamics and statics classes. It was a very rewarding experience, and I was able to continue to connect with some amazing people at Morgan.
Having now completed two summers with them, I was very appreciative of the added responsibility and tasks I received this past summer. Through this internship, I was able to grow my skills in computer-aided design (CAD), calculations and critical thinking skills. I was able to take a larger part in the design and detailing of many different parts, including smaller parts like a mount for a rotary limit switch all the way up to the design of a handrail layout for an entire crane trolley. This allowed me to work on my problem-solving and communication skills, as I was able to think and talk through different solutions with each design. The ability to design such a wide variety of parts also helped me feel like a part of the team, positively impacting what the result would look like.
I want to thank Morgan’s for everything they have done for me these past two summers. They have helped me to grow as an engineer and as a person. I’m very appreciative of the opportunity that they have given me. I’d also like to thank AIST for providing me with this opportunity, and for helping me continue my journey at the University of Dayton.
