Ternium Mexico

During my 2-month internship at Ternium, I gained hands-on experience in cold rolling and annealing operations while contributing to projects focused on process optimization, quality and data analysis.

My main project involved evaluating the optimization of annealing time for C071TM commercial steel using a thermal simulation model. The analysis estimated that thermal homogeneity could be achieved in approximately 6 hours, leading to the proposal of a 7-hour annealing cycle with an appropriate safety margin. This study identified a potential opportunity to improve process efficiency while maintaining product quality and mechanical property requirements.

I also participated in evaluating weathering conditions within the cold rolling mill facility and supported the analysis of APM60M steel, which had generated operational challenges related to accumulator displacement and high rolling forces in the tandem mill. These activities allowed me to better understand the relationship between material behavior and process performance.

In addition, I assisted in the collection and management of operational data used for dashboards that monitor critical cold rolling variables. I also contributed to process capability studies by analyzing Cp, Cpk, Pp and Ppk indices for thickness control in the tandem mill. This work supported compliance with IATF requirements for automotive steel products, including material supplied to Ford.

Additionally, I supported document management and revision activities related to an internal audit process and completed training courses in cold rolling and annealing.

This internship provided me with the opportunity to apply engineering principles in a real industrial environment, strengthen my analytical and problem-solving skills, and learn from experienced professionals. I am grateful for the guidance and support provided by the Ternium team and for the opportunity to contribute to projects that support operational excellence and continuous improvement.
