AIST Foundation Steel Intern Scholarship

Kimberly A. Patterson

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern with The Systems Group in Little Rock, Ark., USA — a company known for designing and building steel mills. From day one, I was welcomed into a supportive and collaborative environment. One unique perk: I was even able to bring my dog to work!

During the first few weeks, I focused on learning our unique and competitive software and developing my ability to read and interpret piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs). These foundational skills were put to use in a training project where I contributed to the design of a small section of a steel mill.

Once I completed my training, I was trusted with real responsibilities. I helped design piping layouts for various areas of active mill projects the company was working on this summer. It was both exciting and rewarding to see my designs integrated alongside those of experienced engineers.

Designing layouts involves interpreting general plans from the client, adapting them to fit within existing equipment and spatial constraints, and coordinating with field teams to ensure seamless implementation. Through this process, I witnessed firsthand how the engineers at The Systems Group truly live up to their mission of providing "engineered solutions for a safer, more productive steel industry."

While I love being in the office, I hope next summer I’ll get to see more of the field side of this amazing industry!
