AIST Foundation Steel Intern Scholarship

Luke E. Tilka

This summer, I gained valuable real‑world experience as a mechanical engineering intern at Nucor Steel West Virginia. As a greenfield project, I had the opportunity to have a wide variety of projects such as designing training devices and modifying drawings for new equipment. This provided me with a better understanding of how design decisions affect fabrication and installation. I also assisted with hands‑on tasks on the construction site such as fabrication and installation of new equipment. There, I was taught how to work efficiently and safely alongside experienced tradespeople.

Beyond technical work, I strengthened my collaboration and problem‑solving skills, adapting to changing project needs and balancing design intent with practical constraints. These experiences helped me grow as an engineer and prepared me to confidently approach challenges in my future career.
