AIST Foundation Steel Intern Scholarship - William E. Schwabe
Nolan J.M. Clark
This summer I completed an internship with The Systems Group working as an intern field engineer, on a piping construction project in Berkeley, S.C., USA. Through this experience, I have gained a wealth of technical knowledge about piping, inventory, construction materials and instrumentation.
I worked primarily with materials management, where we would receive, document and track deliveries of pipe spools, support materials and process instrumentation. I would also work with operators and tradespersons in the field to fulfill material requisitions for the general foremen. I collaborated with other on-site field engineers to help solve practical problems that came up over the course of installation. I’ve gained an appreciation for how important field verifying measurements and specifications are, and how crucial work planning is to help the overall project go smoothly.
During my time with The Systems Group, I had the pleasure of working with colleagues who helped ensure that I was trained in all the site-specific hazards and dangers prior to working, while placing great emphasis on the importance of working safely.
I would like to thank AIST and The Systems Group for this incredible opportunity, and I look forward to where my future in the steel industry leads me.
